The BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Science course explores physiology, psychology and biomechanics, helping you apply scientific understanding to sport, exercise, performance and health contexts.
BSc (Hons)
Four years full-time or eight years part-time
September, January, May
The BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Science course explores sport and exercise through physiology, psychology and biomechanics. You will investigate real-world problems across sport, exercise and health, from high-performance environments to physical activity as a route to better wellbeing.
You will develop knowledge of exercise physiology, human movement, sport psychology, personal training, research methods, sport conditioning and biomechanics. The Physical Activity & Health pathway gives you the opportunity to focus on the role of sport and exercise in supporting health, wellbeing and inclusive participation.
The course combines online learning with mandatory face-to-face sessions on campus, practical workshops, work-based learning and research-led teaching. It is designed to build subject knowledge, practical confidence and graduate skills for employment or further study.
This course is for students interested in the science behind sport, exercise, performance and health. It is suitable if you want to understand how the body and mind respond to physical activity and how that knowledge can be applied in professional sport, health, fitness or community settings.
Graduates can progress into careers in sport science, sport development, exercise referral, physical activity and health, personal training, research, education, professional sport, local authorities, the NHS, governing bodies and commercial or public health organisations. Many students also continue to postgraduate study in areas such as physiotherapy, physical education, sport coaching and sport and exercise science research.
Study sport and exercise through physiology, psychology and biomechanics.
Specialise in physical activity and health through dedicated Level 10 module choices.
The programme includes CIMSPA-aligned modules and CASES undergraduate endorsement.
Next Steps at University is an additional optional module for direct-entry students. Other suitable options may be available subject to timetabling, prerequisites and agreement with the programme leader.
The programme uses hybrid delivery, combining online learning with mandatory face-to-face campus learning. Teaching methods include tutorials, seminars, practical workshops, simulated work environments, small group work, online learning, peer learning and independent study. Assessment methods may include group and individual work, exams, reflective reports, essays, presentations, case studies, programme planning, portfolios, blogs, podcasts and research outputs.
Students may take part in work-based learning modules and professional development activities. Additional costs may include PVG membership, placement or internship expenses, external facility costs, optional field trips, CIMSPA membership and optional branded sports kit.

Minimum entry is 108 UCAS tariff points, normally BBBB including a science subject, preferably Biology, or PE. Maths is required at Standard Grade 3, Intermediate 2 or National 4.
A Levels: BCC including a science subject, preferably Biology, or PE. Relevant HNC awards in fitness, health, exercise, sport science, physical activity and health or sport therapy may also be considered, normally with Grade B in the graded unit.
Year 2 entry may be possible with A Levels BBB including a science subject, preferably Biology, or PE. Relevant HNC awards normally require Grade A in the graded unit. Relevant HND awards may also be considered where graded unit requirements are met.
Year 3 entry may be possible with relevant HND awards including Fitness, Health & Exercise, Applied Sports Science, Applied Sports and Exercise Science, and Physical Activity and Health. Applicants normally require AA for a double graded unit or A for a single graded unit.
Volunteer or work experience in sport, health or exercise environments is expected. Applicants should submit a strong personal statement and reference. Successful applicants will need to register with the Protecting Vulnerable Groups scheme.
