The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course covers broad-based civil engineering subjects, helping you build the knowledge and skills needed to plan, design and implement major civil engineering projects.

You will study engineering mechanics, applied mathematics, structural design, sustainable construction, hydraulics, surveying, civil engineering materials, project management, soil mechanics, water resources, ground and highway engineering and construction management.

The course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators and offers an optional sandwich route, allowing students to gain substantial workplace experience in industry.

This course is for students who want to work on the design, construction and maintenance of buildings, bridges, roads, water systems, drainage, sewage, transport infrastructure and other civil engineering projects.

Study structures, hydraulics, surveying, construction, soil mechanics and highway engineering.

Sandwich option

Teaching and learning may include lectures, tutorials, laboratories, seminars, group work, independent learning, demonstrations, field experience and project work. Assessment may include class tests, laboratory reports, design work, presentations, projects and formal examinations.

The optional sandwich element consists of 36 weeks of workplace learning. Graduates work across construction companies, consulting civil engineering practices, local authorities and infrastructure organisations.

What qualifications do you need?

We welcome Scottish, UK and international students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.

  • Scottish Highers: BCCC including Higher Mathematics plus National 5 Physics at grade B or above
  • A Levels: CCD including Maths and Physics

An appropriate HNC or HND award may support advanced entry, with the level of entry and credit awarded subject to the content of the HN programme.

Applicants may also be considered with other academic, vocational or professional qualifications deemed equivalent. International applicants with equivalent qualifications are welcomed.

Applicants whose first language is not English must meet UWS English language requirements.
