The BA (Hons) Social Sciences course is an interdisciplinary degree that gives you a broad academic grounding in social sciences, with the opportunity to specialise in Politics and Policy, Sociology and Policy, or Sociology.

You will explore contemporary local and global challenges using social science theory, research methods and evidence-based learning. The course has a strong Research and Inquiry spine running from first year through to the final-year dissertation, helping you develop practical research skills that can be applied across different working environments.

You will study sociology, politics and policy in the first two years before choosing from a wide range of optional modules at Levels 9 and 10, allowing you to shape the course around your interests and potential bracketed award pathway.

Teaching uses student-centred learning, diverse forms of engagement and assessment, research-focused activity, case studies, discussion, presentations, written work and independent study.

The course offers structured choice at Levels 9 and 10. Depending on module selection, students may become eligible for a bracketed award in Politics and Policy, Sociology and Policy, or Sociology.

Entry Requirements

What qualifications do you need?

We welcome Scottish, UK and international students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.

  • Scottish Highers: BBCC standard entry, CCC minimum entry, or CC plus a recognised access route
  • A Levels: CCC
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: H3 H3 H3 H3
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma: 27 points
  • T Level: pass with grade A*–C

HNC or BTEC Level 4 HNC Social Sciences or Social Studies with grade B in the graded unit may support Year 2 entry. HND or BTEC Level 5 HND Social Sciences or Social Studies may also be considered.

SQA HND or BTEC Level 5 HND Social Sciences or Social Studies with BB in the graded unit may support Year 3 entry.

Relevant SWAP access courses, Glasgow University Access Course, HNCs in related subjects and other academic, vocational or professional qualifications may be considered at the discretion of the University.
