The MSc Sport and Exercise (Strength and Conditioning) develops your specialist knowledge of strength and conditioning, applied sport and exercise practice, athlete development and evidence-based performance support.
You will explore contemporary issues in strength and conditioning alongside planning and monitoring, research methods and applied sport and exercise. You’ll learn how to use current research to inform practice, develop your professional judgement and decision-making, and evaluate approaches designed to support athlete development and performance.
Work-based learning runs throughout the course, giving you opportunities to apply your knowledge in a relevant sporting environment. This can take place with your existing employer or, if you are not currently working, through a placement with one of the University’s partners. You’ll develop reflective, analytical, research and critical-thinking skills while investigating real challenges within applied sport and exercise.
This course is for sport practitioners and graduates who want to specialise in strength and conditioning, develop their applied practice and progress within the sport and exercise profession. Applicants should ideally bring some experience of applied sport and exercise to support their development throughout the course.
Graduates can develop careers across the sport and exercise profession, with opportunities in professional sports clubs, commercial and social enterprises, local authority sport programmes, schools, disability sport and national governing bodies. The course can also support progression into education or further research, including doctoral study

Teaching combines face-to-face learning, digital learning, independent study, group and individual problem-solving activities, and tutor and peer support. Work-based learning is embedded throughout the course, giving you opportunities to apply your learning and develop your practice in relevant sporting environments. Assessment is designed around the learning outcomes of each module, with further details provided in individual module information.
Work-based learning is embedded throughout the course, giving students opportunities to apply their learning in relevant sport and exercise environments. Students may need to meet costs associated with PVG membership, travel for placements or work-based learning, external facilities used for teaching and optional field trips.

Applicants will typically hold a degree or equivalent qualification. The preferred entry requirement is a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree in a relevant subject such as Sport Coaching, Sport and Exercise Science, Sport Management, Sport Development, Sport Nutrition or Sport Studies. An ordinary degree may also be accepted.
Applicants with other relevant academic, vocational or professional qualifications may also be considered. Relevant work experience, UKCC or National Governing Body accreditation of some academic equivalence, alongside extensive experience in the area, may be considered through interview. Evidence of applied sport and exercise experience is desirable.
Applicants should provide evidence of applied sport and exercise experience to support their engagement and development on the course. Successful applicants are also required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. Registration is managed through the University after an offer has been accepted, and students are responsible for the applicable PVG fee.
