The BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science course focuses on the laboratory diagnosis and monitoring of disease. It has been designed to provide training as a biomedical scientist, integrating academic study with work-based learning in an approved NHS clinical laboratory.
You will study key areas including human anatomy and physiology, cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, immunology and microbiology. The course combines theory with a high proportion of practical laboratory work, helping you develop confidence through learning by doing.
The BSc (Hons) title is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council. Entry to this route is only available after successful completion of Level 8 of the Biomedical Science programme and a competitive selection process.
This course is for students progressing from Biomedical Science who want to prepare for professional biomedical scientist practice and have the academic achievement and professional readiness required for the competitive applied route.
Graduates are well placed for roles in NHS clinical laboratories, blood service laboratories, health protection, medical, pharmaceutical, veterinary and food research and development, healthcare-related commercial roles and postgraduate research.
The BSc (Hons) title is accredited by IBMS and approved by HCPC.
Includes a compulsory 15-week integrated placement in an approved NHS clinical laboratory in Year 3.
Develop practical and scientific skills across biomedical science, microbiology, genetics, immunology and pathology.
You will learn on campus through lectures, practical laboratories, tutorials, workshops, independent study and group activities. Assessment may include examinations, class tests, coursework, lab reports, case studies, presentations and practical laboratory assessments.
The programme includes a compulsory 15-week integrated placement in an approved NHS clinical laboratory. Students are encouraged to engage with professional bodies including HCPC and IBMS from the start of the programme.

Entry to Applied Biomedical Science only occurs after successful completion of Level 8 of the Biomedical Science programme and a competitive selection process. You cannot apply directly to Applied Biomedical Science.
There is a minimum entry qualification for competence in English language of IELTS level 7 with no element below 6.5, or equivalent.
The number of students who can follow the applied route is limited by the number of available NHS placements. Selection is based on a range of criteria including professional attitude and academic achievement, and may include interview.
Students who are unable to progress on this route may be given the opportunity to transfer to a related programme.
