Build legal knowledge and transferable professional skills

The BA (Hons) Law course develops your knowledge of the Scottish legal system and introduces you to wider legal, social, economic and political contexts in which law operates.

You will study core areas of Scots law, including public law, criminal law, private law, property, family law, succession and trusts, company law and international human rights law. As you progress, you will build skills in legal research, analysis, communication, critical judgement and independent study.

The course combines legal theory with opportunities to explore contemporary legal issues and specialist areas of interest through optional modules and an Honours dissertation.

It is suitable if you are interested in legal systems, rights, legal reasoning, public policy, social justice or the relationship between law and wider society.

Course Details

Scots law foundation

Study the Scottish legal system and key branches of law, including public law, criminal law and private law.

Legal research and advocacy

Develop legal research, communication, advocacy and critical judgement through workshops and independent study.

Critical and contextual study

Explore law in its social, economic and political context, with opportunities to compare legal systems and international perspectives.

Students can study up to 20 credits from the wider School of Business and Creative Industries or UWS portfolio, where available.

Students must normally select at least 100 credits of LAWW-coded modules at this level.

Level 10 optional Law modules are subject to availability and resourcing.

Full-time students typically attend on campus for up to three hours per week for each module at Levels 7 and 8, and up to two hours per week for each module at Levels 9 and 10. Teaching normally includes lectures, workshops, online supported learning, discussion, presentations and independent preparation.

You will develop knowledge of law alongside transferable skills in research, written and verbal communication, analysis, synthesis, critical judgement, independent learning and professional reflection.

Entry Requirements

What qualifications do you need?

We welcome Scottish, UK and international students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.

  • Scottish Highers: BBBC including English, plus Mathematics at National 5
  • A Levels: BCC plus three GCSEs including English and Mathematics
  • Level 8 entry: HNC Legal Services or equivalent HNC in Law
  • Level 9 entry: HND Legal Services or equivalent HND in Law
  • No other Higher National courses will normally be considered for advanced entry; equivalent HNC or HND Law qualifications are assessed by the Programme Leader

Applicants who do not meet the formal entry requirements may be considered on the basis of other qualifications and/or relevant experience.

Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University’s English language requirements.
