Learn to make films and understand cinema

The BA (Hons) Filmmaking & Screenwriting course helps you develop practical filmmaking skills alongside a critical understanding of cinema as art, culture and commerce.

You will study digital filmmaking, screenwriting, sound recording, editing, film analysis, documentary, drama production, producing, pitching, business planning, distribution and creative research. The course balances practical production with film theory and critical study.

The course is accredited by ScreenSkills Select Scotland and uses enquiry-based learning, group production work, screenings, tutorials, practical projects and engagement with visiting industry professionals.

Who is this course for?

This course is for students who want to make films, write for the screen and understand how cinema works as both a creative form and an industry. It is suitable if you are interested in directing, producing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, sound, film studies, documentary, drama or independent film production.

Where this degree can take you

Graduates can use this degree as a route into filmmaking, screenwriting, production, camera and sound departments, post-production, production assistance, directing, independent film work, creative companies or wider graduate roles using research, storytelling and communication skills. You may also progress to postgraduate study in film, media, cultural studies or creative production.

You will learn through lectures, screenings, demonstrations, tutorials, group and individual project work, multimedia learning and screen practice. Assessment includes creative production, scripts, treatments, production work, essays, group presentations and research-informed project work.

The course is accredited by ScreenSkills Select Scotland and prepares students for creative employment, independent filmmaking, production roles and postgraduate study in film, media and cultural studies.

Entry Requirements

What qualifications do you need?

We welcome Scottish, UK and international students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.

Scottish Highers BBBB including English and/or Media Studies. At least two other subjects are required at Intermediate level or Standard Grade.
Advanced Highers CC in subject areas aligned with the Higher requirements.
A Levels CC from cognate or related areas, plus at least three GCSEs.
HNC/HND Direct entry to Level 8 or Level 9 may be possible for students with an appropriate Media or Communication HNC/HND award, with entry level and credit subject to the content of the HN course.
New College Lanarkshire For entry to Level 9 at New College Lanarkshire, an HND is required and entry is managed by the collaborative partner.

Applicants may also be considered with other equivalent qualifications or relevant experience. Where English is not the first language, applicants must demonstrate competence in line with the University requirements. Some experience of film or media production is desirable.
