The BA (Hons) Childhood Studies course supports students with relevant prior study to deepen their knowledge of childhood, education, wellbeing and professional practice.

The BA (Hons) Childhood Studies course is designed for students who already hold relevant Level 7 or Level 8 credit and want to continue their studies in the childhood sector. You will explore childhood development, education, communication, participation, play, pedagogy and professional practice.
The course supports critical understanding of the lives of children and families, including the social, cultural, policy and practice contexts that shape childhood. You will build academic, professional and reflective skills that can support further study and professional progression.
As you progress, you will study topics such as childhood today, principles of justice, communication, family pedagogy, quality in education, interprofessional practice and advanced childhood policy.
This course is for students who have already completed relevant study such as an HNC or HND in Childhood Practice, Childcare and Education, Social Care, Social Sciences or a related subject. It is suitable if you want to develop your knowledge for work or further study in childhood-related fields.
Graduates may use the degree as a foundation for further study and professional routes in areas such as teaching, social work, psychology, child protection, family support, education, early years and wider childhood services.

The optional module is normally only completed where required after no further attempts in another Level 8 module.
You will learn through lectures, seminars, tutorials, group work, guided independent study and reflective activities. Assessment may include essays, reports, presentations, professional reflection, research proposals and dissertation work.
The course develops academic, personal and professional attributes that support progression into further study or work with children, families and services.

Applicants will normally have 120 credit points at Level 7 in a subject broadly relevant to Childhood Studies, such as Education, Social Sciences, Child Health or similar.
Applicants with an additional 120 credit points at Level 8, such as HND Childhood Practice and a practitioner qualification, may be considered for Level 9 entry.
Applicants whose first language is not English must meet UWS English language requirements. Relevant experience, IT skills and evidence of skills for childhood sector settings can strengthen an application.
