The BSc (Hons) Applied Bioscience course explores life at levels ranging from molecules and cells to populations, communities and the biosphere. The broad structure gives you a strong foundation across bioscience disciplines before allowing you to develop specialist interests in later years.
You will study biology, chemistry, practical laboratory skills, microbiology, genetics, physiology and applied bioscience topics. You can also choose from options such as work-related learning, bioprofessional practice, human physiology, applied microbiology, genetics, immunology, pest management and public health microbiology.
The course develops critical, analytical and problem-solving skills, with an optional work-related learning element that can help you apply your knowledge in a professional context.
This course is for students who want a broad bioscience degree with flexibility to shape their learning around biological science, laboratory work, microbiology, genetics, public health, ecology or related areas.
Graduates can progress into vocational science roles, laboratory work, research, life science industries, postgraduate study, teacher education routes in Biology and General Science or wider graduate careers that value scientific training.
Build knowledge across human biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and the laboratory investigation of disease.
Develop practical, analytical and research skills through laboratory-based learning and scientific investigation.
Choose work-related learning or bioprofessional practice in later years.
Modules are delivered on campus, with one day per module nominally assigned. Teaching includes lectures, practical work, field trips, tutorials, independent study and use of the virtual learning environment.
Students must provide their own laboratory coat for practical sessions. Safety glasses or goggles must be worn in practical sessions and can be provided by technical staff if required.
We welcome Scottish, UK and international students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.
Please visit our Undergraduate entry requirements page for information on our different entry requirements, including country-specific details for EU and non-EU qualifications.
Entry to the BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science programme is only available following successful completion of Level 8 of the Biomedical Science programme and a competitive selection process. Direct entry to the programme is not available. Places are limited and depend on the availability of NHS clinical laboratory placements.
Selection considers a range of criteria, including academic achievement and the development of a professional attitude, assessed partly through interview.
