Understand health across people, animals and the environment

The MSc One Health: Environment, Animal and Human Disease course helps you develop a critical understanding of the connections between human disease, animal health and environmental change.

You will explore how climate change, pollution, urbanisation, deforestation, habitat loss, zoonotic infection and antimicrobial resistance shape health outcomes across species and communities. The course takes a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on biomedical science, microbiology, zoology, public health, veterinary medicine, environmental science and policy.

You will study core themes in One Health, environmental, animal and human health, research design and a masters research project. Optional modules allow you to explore areas such as emerging diseases, food and environmental microbiology, global health economics, infection control and zoonoses.

This course is for graduates and professionals interested in the One Health approach to managing disease and health challenges. It is suited to those with backgrounds in biology, biomedical science, zoology, veterinary medicine, environmental science, public health, nursing, pharmacy, allied health, health policy or related areas.

Optional modules run depending on student numbers.

The course is delivered at UWS Lanarkshire Campus using lectures, tutorials, workshops, group work and student presentations. Teaching materials and resources are available through the virtual learning platform.

Assessment is designed to develop independent learning, critical thinking, analysis, communication and the ability to apply One Health thinking to real-world challenges.

The course supports careers across research, public health, animal and human health, environmental sectors, education, health policy, industry and infection control.

Students will require a personal laptop.

Entry Requirements

What qualifications do you need?

We welcome Scottish, UK and international students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.

Applicants will typically have an Honours degree with a minimum 2:2 classification in a subject relevant to One Health.

Relevant subject areas include biology, biomedical science, zoology, veterinary medicine, environmental science, public health, allied health professions such as nursing or pharmacy, health policy or related subjects.

Recognition of prior learning equivalent to PG Dip level, or three years of work experience in a relevant One Health sector, may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University English language requirements.
