The MSc Nursing course is designed for qualified nurses who want to advance their practice, strengthen their critical thinking and develop the skills to improve care and practice outcomes.

You will explore contemporary issues in nursing, including patient safety, quality improvement, role development, leadership, research and service improvement. The course is designed to fit around professional practice, with flexible online delivery for distance learning students and face-to-face delivery for the international full-time cohort.

You will study core modules in quality improvement, role development, leadership and research, alongside optional modules that allow you to tailor learning to your professional interests. The MSc culminates in a dissertation focused on research or an improvement project relevant to nursing practice.

The distance learning cohort studies fully online through the University VLE, supported by interactive resources, presentations, podcasts, tutor engagement, synchronous tutorials and asynchronous discussion boards. The international cohort is delivered face to face with blended learning.

Assessment includes formative and summative activities designed to support critical thinking, leadership, quality improvement, research, reflection and professional development.

The course relates to the participant’s existing professional context and fits the University definition of work-related learning. Students explore links between professional experience, theory and research, and consider how learning can enhance practice in their workplace.

What qualifications do you need?

We welcome Scottish, UK and international students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.

Applicants will typically have a degree or equivalent. Consideration may be given where a degree was gained more than five years ago, where postgraduate study demonstrates currency in certified learning.

Applicants must possess a relevant nursing qualification. Applicants with relevant professional experience only may also be considered on an individual basis. Required documents include an original academic transcript and satisfactory academic and personal references.

Applicants whose first language is not English are expected to achieve IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Skills and experience in information and communication technology, especially online learning, are desirable.
