With an MBA with logistics and supply chain management, students can find jobs at a wide variety of companies, from public and private sector organisations to major retail, manufacturing and transportation companies.

What Jobs Can I Get?

Supply chain managers oversee and manage every stage of production from purchasing to delivery to ensure that their company’s goods are of the highest quality. They work with buyers and suppliers to source products and negotiate contracts and maintain relationships with the other companies involved throughout the production process. Supply chain managers work with other teams to plan and implement strategies to make sure they’re meeting their production goals, analyse performance and look for opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce the costs of the production process. They are also responsible for overseeing the storage of the product until it’s delivered to clients, managing inventory and tracking the goods during delivery.

Logistics and distribution managers are responsible for organising the storage and distribution of goods as well as ensuring the delivery process runs smoothly. It is their responsibility to make sure that the right products are delivered to the right customer on time and at the best possible cost. Additionally, logistics and distribution managers work with supply chain managers to manage stock and also manage delivery times and transport costs. Some companies will plan routes for delivery drivers to ensure the route is the most efficient and cost-effective. Logistics and distribution managers oversee stock control and monitor the flow of goods within their company and, throughout the process, look for areas of weakness. If they notice a part of the process that could be improved, they will work with the appropriate teams to create new strategies to improve the process.

Operations managers help businesses and organisations to increase their efficiency and achieve business goals. Depending on the size and needs of the company, the exact responsibilities of an operations manager can vary significantly but typically include tasks like supervising, hiring and training new employees, strategising and overseeing improvements, and managing other office-wide programs and tasks. Operations managers are responsible for specific tasks often include managing assets such as the office, facilities, and stock and finding opportunities to lower costs and save money. To successfully complete these tasks, an operations manager will need to work with other teams and individuals such as supply chain and logistics and distribution managers.

Supply chain analysts analyse data to make predictions and improve a company’s delivery process and the services it offers customers. Their main priorities are to ensure a company’s supply chain is as efficient and cost-effective as possible to keep their customers happy as well as increase the profit the company is making. To achieve this, supply chain analysts will collect data on the company’s current operations and then analyse the data they collected. They will then create reports to present to other departments and management. Their presentations will also identify the pain points of the supply chain processes as well as propose solutions to these issues.

All of the roles above play a vital part in keeping the supply chain and distribution processes of businesses running smoothly. An MBA with logistics and supply chain management will prepare you for work in a wide variety of industries.

What companies could I work for?

BAE Systems

BAE Systems is a UK-based multinational arms, security, and aerospace company and the largest defence contractor in Europe. The company was founded in 1999 when British Aerospace, a civil and military aircraft manufacturer, acquired Marconi Electronic Systems, which was the defence subsidiary of the General Electric Company. BAE Systems’ headquarters is located in London, and they employ about 90000 people in 40 countries. They manufacture products relating to civil and military aerospace, defence electronics, naval vessels, munitions and land warfare systems and the majority of their sales are military-related. While they are present in many countries around the world, their main markets are the UK, US, Australia and Saudi Arabia. In addition to manufacturing, BAE Systems also provide maintenance, consultancy and training services.

Toyota

Toyota, which is headquartered in Toyota City, Japan, is one of the world’s largest auto manufacturers and makes more than 10 million vehicles each year. The company was founded in 1937, although the first Toyota product, the Toyota Model G Automatic Loom, was created in 1924. Toyota started production of its first vehicles almost ten years later after selling the loom’s patent. Today, a number of Toyota’s vehicles are made in the UK as there are two Toyota manufacturing plants in the country. There is a vehicle manufacturing plant in Derbyshire and an engine manufacturing plant in North Wales. Between the two UK plants, which have been open nearly 30 years, there are about 4000 employees. Once completed, the vehicles produced at Toyota’s UK-based plants are transported around the country as well as the world, and an efficient and effective supply chain is essential.

Amazon

Probably best known for its extensive website and quick shipping, Amazon relies on a massive supply chain to get goods to customers quickly and cheaply. Amazon was founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, although it was called Cadabra until 1995. The business began as an online book retailer based out of Seattle and since then has evolved into the world’s most valuable brand. Today, Amazon manufactures its own products such as the Echo and Kindle and maintains 185 fulfilment centres around the world, with 21 of those in the UK. Another service Amazon offers to its sellers is having Amazon manage the storage and distribution of their products. Amazon allows sellers to store goods in their fulfilment centres which is beneficial for many small businesses as well as allowing Amazon to dispatch the goods quicker.
