
Introduction
A great way to lay the groundwork for your career in business is through studying towards the Business Foundation Programme. This foundation course aims to prepare you for undergraduate study.
When studying this course, you will engage with the latest academic sources and practical case studies. Students will explore important business-focused modules, as well as get the chance to enhance their English language and key study skills.
With the knowledge acquired from studying the Business Foundation Programme, you will be well equipped to progress to the undergraduate level with confidence. For example, you may wish to continue your business education by selecting to study towards a BA (Hons) in International Business.
About the course
This programme is suitable for both international and UK students. We assess each application on an individual basis. When studying towards the Business Foundation Course, students will get the chance to learn from experienced business professionals from both academic and practical business backgrounds.
Key subject areas covered in the course include the core principles of business management, human resource management, marketing, and finance. As mentioned, students will also receive support to improve their English language and study skills.

- Business Organisations – 30 credits
- Business Operations – 30 credits
- IT Skills – 10 credits
- Study Skills – 10 credits
- English for Academic Purposes Level 6.2 – 20 credits
- English for Academic Purposes Level 6.3 – 20 credits
Optional:
- English for Academic Purposes Level 6.1 – 20 credits
Assessment is carried out through a combination of written exams, presentations, case studies, portfolio building and assignments over each academic level of the degree programme.
Number of hours in teaching activities: 360 hours – 30%
Number of hours in independent learning: 840 hours – 70%

How long is the course?
The Business Foundation Programme is a one-year, full-time course.
There are multiple start dates available to allow students the most flexible academic experience. You can begin in January, May or September.
Entry Requirements
Since this programme is a foundational course, applicants do not require prior business qualifications to be considered. However, if you are considering applying, you should ensure you meet the following criteria:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Have achieved the equivalent of 72 UCAS tariff points.
- Must have English language proficiency – more details below.
You can be assured that all applications are considered on an individual level. Therefore, you should be sure to include any relevant qualifications or work experience you might have within your application.
English Language Requirements
Prospective students to the Business Foundation Programme whose native language is not English should have gained the following qualifications in the last 2 years:
- IELTS 4.5 with no component less than 4.0 for the 3-trimester programme.
- Students with IELTS 5.0 with no component less than 4.5 for 2 semesters.
Should you not meet these entry requirements, you may be permitted to take a supplementary English language programme before the start of the programme. You can find out if you are eligible here.
