The MSc Sustainable Technology and Environment course is designed to help graduates develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to lead sustainability agendas within engineering, technology and related sectors.

You will explore the principles of sustainability, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, climate emergency challenges, sustainable energy, environmental protection, stakeholder engagement and the social, economic and environmental impact of technological decisions.

This pathway gives you a strong sustainability foundation while allowing you to build specialist expertise in environmental systems and pollution control.

It is suitable if you are interested in net zero, sustainable innovation, environmental impact, resource management and the role of technology in creating more sustainable systems.

Graduates can pursue roles such as sustainability engineer, sustainability manager, sustainability consultant, carbon officer, energy manager, environmental manager or related roles in research, education, industry, public services and consultancy. The course can also support progression to research degrees.

Students complete 180 credits for the MSc award, including the required core modules, pathway-specific optional modules and MSc Dissertation.

The course is delivered at Paisley Campus through a blend of formal teaching sessions, seminars, tutorials, group participation, self-directed learning, problem-based learning, international case studies and seminars. Students are typically on campus three days per week, depending on modules chosen. Assessment includes written examinations, coursework and practical exercises.

There is no formal industrial placement, but students have access to business and industry contexts through case studies, professional speakers and the potential to carry out MSc research using examples from local agencies and companies.

Students who achieve 180 credits, including the required core and optional modules for this route, are eligible for the award of MSc Sustainable Technology and Environment. Graduates may progress into sustainability-focused employment or further research study.

We welcome Scottish, UK and international students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.

Applicants for MSc Sustainable Technology, MSc Sustainable Technology and Environment, and MSc Sustainable Technology and Management will typically hold a 2:2 or above in an appropriate discipline from a UK university, or an equivalent qualification. Applicants for MSc Sustainable Technology and Energy will typically hold a 2:2 or above in an appropriate engineering discipline, or equivalent.

Non-standard entry may be considered for applicants with an HND, DipHE, professional qualification or substantial relevant experience. Applicants without formal qualifications may be considered where their professional experience demonstrates the knowledge and skills required for postgraduate study.

Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English language competence in line with UWS postgraduate requirements.

It is desirable that entrants have skills in numeracy, communication, report writing, presentation and investigation techniques.
